There are many versions of this story. My favorite version is of when the Morningstar fell in love. Long ago, when the Earth was still young, and humanity had the fear of God in them. The angels and archangels were allowed to freely wander the human realm as long as they didn’t directly interfere in the lives of mortals. One day Michael and Lucifer were out wandering the mortal realm when they came across a human festival. They joined in the festive spirit along with the mortals, drinking wine, singing, and dancing till late into the night. Needing a break from all the joyous activities Lucifer decided to go for a quiet stroll through the dark. While wandering, he happened upon a dark and quiet forest into which he entered. He walked and walked until he came to a clearing. And that is where he saw Her. She was out in the clearing picking the flowers that glowed in the moonlight. Curious, the Morningstar approached. He startled her, of course, but they laughed it off and began conversing with each other. This was the first time the Morningstar had ever properly interacted with a mortal before. Towards the break of dawn, Lucifer heard God’s call to come home, and so he reluctantly left the company of his newfound mortal companion. Upon his return to heaven, he was saddled with a load of work. While doing the will of God, he couldn’t help but think of her. So, in his free time, the Morningstar would wander the human realm to find her. And every time he did, he found her, and they conversed with each other for hours on end. They learnt much about each other and where the other came from. In this case, love was inevitable. So, they fell for each other without hesitation. One day when Lucifer was leaving to go see her again, he was stopped by Michael, who questioned him about his recent outings. Naturally, the Morningstar did not answer his brother, for angels cannot lie. Time and time again Lucifer evaded Michael as best he could and his time with her was always cut short, but luck was on their side, for now. One day when he went to her Michael followed behind silently. When Michael saw them together, he was enraged. He rushed to God’s side and told him of Lucifers deeds. Enraged God summoned Lucifer home. A summon the Morningstar could not fight. Once he entered the gates of heaven, he was tried against God. The thrones of heaven shackled and imprisoned him, doing God’s will. The Morningstar accepted his punishment from God humbly for God promised not to hurt her. So, there the Morningstar stayed, locked in heavens tower, unable to return to his love. Enraged that his punishment was so light, Michael rushed to the human realm in search of her. But he could not find her, for the Morningstar had hidden away from his brethren fearing for her safety once he was taken away from her. And hidden she stayed for a long while, but Michael was persistent in his ways. Eventually he did find her, she had been living in a secluded human home with her two children. When Michael’s eyes fell on the two younglings, he was both disgusted and awed, the two bore the mark of Lucifer. He was their father, and they were the first Nephilim the world had ever seen. Rage filled Michael when he realized that Lucifer had had a semblance of a mortal life with this woman. So, he cast her soul into hell. Michael attempted to do the same with the children, but they had escaped from his grasp. While they ran in fear, the angel Gabriel found them and took them under his wing. Having heard from them everything that transpired he rushed to heaven to tell the news to the Morningstar, for they had always been close brothers. When the Morningstar heard the news, he grew enraged and escaped from his prison, leaving destruction in his wake as he flew to Michael. Heaven shook as the two clashed. All those who were partial to Lucifer fought with him against all who were partial to Michael. The war ensued for three days before God had had enough. With a word from God the war was stopped and all those fighting were tried against him. Lucifer pleaded with God to let him find her, to let him find his love. God allowed it, as long as the Morningstar did no further harm to his brethren after his search. And so, the Morningstar rushed to hells domain in search of her. But he was too late. Her soul had already dissipated, there was not a single trace of her left behind. Unable to keep his promise to God, his father, the vengeful Morningstar returned to heaven seeking blood. But before he could deliver a killing blow, Lucifer the Morningstar, the one closest to God, was cast out of heaven. He fell to hell, where he became the sin of pride, a prince. Following his downfall, those partial to him, followed behind him, rebuking heaven and entering hell, where 13 of them became generals. As a prince, Lucifer’s job was to watch over the damned. But he also had another job, to punish all those of the heavenly realm that went against their father and creator. And so, it is said that somewhere deep in hell can be found 47 angels, forsaken but not fallen. And thus, Lucifer Morningstar, God’s most favored angel became the seventh prince of hell and is now called the Devil.
