It’s Not Your Trash Tank!

The Ocean, the cloudless sky which is the planet's largest ecosystem containing Zooplankton to Antarctic blue whales, provides a vital role in the earth's climate regulation. Brighter colored corals to scary goblin sharks in the shady blue water ocean has got a whole wondrous and adventurous world to discover. Only 5% of the ocean have yet been explored by humans, which has led scientists to find significant resources which are beneficial for many sectors.

Scientists have found out that Phytoplankton produce an estimated 50-80% of Earth's oxygen and that the ocean is the largest store of carbon. Marine microbes and plants also supply medicinal sources which are beneficial for pharmaceutical development. The ocean provides millions of livelihoods that stimulate local and global economies. Ocean also plays an important role in food security, providing one fifth of the animal protein people eat.

Ocean provides a vast array of recreational opportunities, including diving, snorkeling and many others. Marine debris and anthropogenic effects are currently occurring in a polluted ocean environment which makes it perilous for marine biodiversity which directly causes the whole ecosystem.

In 2020 after finding out of the loss of half of the Great Barrier Reef, ocean and environmental activists stepped to aggressive actions to decrease the greenhouse gas emission and to conserve the ocean. However, with an alarming speed global warming is leading to extreme weather events. Ocean acidification, coral bleaching, fish migrations, deep sea warming and many more hazardous conditions have occurred within the marine world.

Sustainable etiquettes and actions are needed for a sustainable future. It’s not only about watching the twinkling waters at sunset, think about marine animals, the ocean isn’t a trash tank! People may not see the long term effects of polluting the ocean, it's better to be concerned about the potential consequences of inaction. Human health, infrastructure, the stability of food, water resources and biodiversity of the planet's ecosystem are at risk with treating the ocean as a place to dump trash. Using reusable products, stepping on eco-friendly, sustainable actions, policy making and campaigns to protect nature are possible actions we humans can carry out for a positive impact on the environment. Following sustainable development goals we have to aim for a better tomorrow. Ocean is essential for all life on earth. For a sustainable future, we must protect and preserve marine ecosystems.
