Individual action to fight global warming

Global warming or the increase in average global temperature is one of the biggest problems that the world is facing today. Although many still believe that climate change is a hoax, scientists claim that the rate at which the temperatures are rising, is very high now in comparison to the last five decades. Global warming poses a threat to all life forms on earth which includes humans. I believe that we as individuals of society have a responsibility in taking action, to prevent global warming.

Problems that arise due to global warming include heat waves, melting of glaciers and rise of sea levels. Global warming directly or indirectly affects many aspects of the world. Even though there are so many complications that arise, due to global warming, some people have a difficulty in comprehending the seriousness of this situation. Meanwhile, there are a vast majority of people who are unaware of global warming. To effectively solve any problem either a complex mathematical sum or even something easier, it is essential to first know about the existence of the issue. As individuals, we can make sure that we, as well as those around us, are educated about global warming.

CO2 is one of the major greenhouse gases that is released into the atmosphere. It is the leading cause of global warming as it traps the heat within Earth’s atmosphere. Around 65% of CO2 released, according to EPA statistics, is due to fossil fuel burning and industrial processes. Fossil fuels such as petroleum, coal and natural gases are utilized to provide energy for modes of travel in land, air and sea. As humans, there are a few ways to reduce the emission of CO2. Switching from normal modes to eco-friendly means of transport is one such method. Using public transport more often as well as sharing rides with friends also has an indirect impact in the reduction of CO2 emissions. methods such as riding a bike or taking a walk, instead of travelling in vehicles not only benefits the environment, but also helps us to maintain a healthier lifestyle.

Another greenhouse gas that causes global warming is methane. It is emitted from the production of coal, oil and natural gas as well as from livestock and agricultural practices. In the meat and dairy industries, cattle and meat rearing are observed. Cows release methane gas which accounts for about 4% of the emissions of methane due to the actions of humans, according to the UN Food and Agricultural Organization. Changes in diet by reducing the consumption of red meats (beef and lamb) as well as dairy products would lead to a reduction in livestock farming thereby indirectly reducing global warming. Hence being vegetarian or vegan is considered to be a benefit in tackling climate change to a given extent and additionally, it has many other health benefits as well.

Scientists believe that there is still hope of reversing the adverse effects by taking proper measures. Jack Johnson famously said, “An individual action multiplied by millions, creates global change” which is accurate in the case of preventing global warming. The world is in dire need of saving for which we all can play a part, by conserving it for future generations.
