Improving our mental Health

Updated: Feb 7, 2022

During the two years of the COVID-19 pandemic currently faced, people all around the world may be locked inside their homes without engaging in any physical/social activities.

This year, 2022, is a new beginning for people; mentally, physically and socially every individual has to improve themselves to re-enter this competitive world. Let’s improve our mental health to be a successful person this year. An individuals' rebuilding will lead to the Refreshment, Healing & Growth of society.

What is mental health and why is it important?

The combination of physical, social and emotional wellbeing is simply described as our mental health. Mental health affects our everyday lives in the form of decision-making, critical thinking and emotional control, etc. During the pandemic, every aspect of our mental health was distracted. As a result, the importance of rebuilding our mental health came into play which helps us to cope with our stresses in life, continue good relationships, good physical health, work management with higher productivity and more.

How can I improve my mental health?

There are many ways of improving our mental health;

Staying positive.

To have a successful outlook, staying positive is much required. This includes the balancing of negative and positive emotions. Controlling these emotions will lead you through difficult situations which will, as a result, help you respond to problems accurately. For example, it isn't helpful nor healthy to keep thinking about negative aspects that happened in the past or worry too much about the future.

Practicing gratitude

Simply be thankful for the good things in your life. This can include incidences like enjoying a nice meal or chilling with your family and friends. Being grateful will help you take your life into a new pathway. Take a moment to enjoy the happiest and positive experiences in life that you've had.

Taking care of your physical health

By being physically active, your mood will get improved through the reduction of feeling stressed and depressed. Psychologists have experimentally proved that for the variations of our mood, sleep is considered as one of the main factors. It’s important to make sure that you have a regular sleep schedule and get enough quality sleep. Eating healthy foods and a balanced diet is also required for maintaining proper mental health.

Connecting with others.

After the pandemic, certain ways of socializing became unstable. From this year onwards, we have to get together and build up healthy and strong relationships with one another. Having proper bonding protects you from the harms of stress. When considering the theme of bonding or 'socializing', it requires you to be social and connective with new people besides family and friends. For example, volunteering for a local organization or community like Rotaract as a hobby would be great.

Developing a sense of meaning and purpose in life.

This could be done by volunteering, learning new skills or by engaging in a job or exploring your spirituality.

Developing coping mechanisms

This is relevant to how you should deal with stressful and problematic occasions. You have to take necessary action, be flexible and make the most accurate decision according to the situation.

Meditation

Meditation is the process by which you learn to focus your attention and awareness. Meditation consists of two main types; mindfulness meditation and transcendental meditation. Meditation requires a quiet environment, a specific comfortable posture, proper focus and an open attitude. You should let distractions come and go without considering them.

Considering all, let’s build our mental health step by step, individually. That will lead to a revolution in social health in our society. We can then take the necessary action to begin our new journey of life after the pandemic together by improving our mental health in the future. This will lead to refreshing the world into a better place.
