“Healthy Pandemic” A webinar on planning and incorporate healthy food habits

The Sports Committee of SIST organizes a productive webinar on how to plan and incorporate healthy food habits in our day-to-day life. This webinar was held on the 14th of February 2021 via the google meets online platform. This webinar was held as a part of the commemoration of the 20th anniversary of SIST. This webinar came out very successfully with the participation of most of the students at SIST including many faculty members and the chairman of SIST, Mr. Jayanthan Kulasingham himself contributed to this educational evening with his participation and his constant support.


The guest speaker for the event was Mr. Ashen Pieris who is an Alumni of the SIST and as well as a lecturer of Biochemistry and Sports nutrition at the SIST faculty. The webinar was much more interactive and productive with his amazing presentation and the knowledge that was shared.


The session was started with how the ‘western diet’ can promote the disturbance in healthy intestinal microorganisms. The variety of food items that we can take during such situations also were discussed. Mainly the speaker Mr. Ashen was briefed on how to maintain a well-balanced diet. This was explained with a well-defined food guide pyramid and a food plate model. Moving with the webinar, the participant was able to gain a good knowledge regarding facts of vitamins and minerals and also how much that a one-person should consume per day. The general facts of how much vegetables and fruits are needed to consume per day and also why hydration important were also carried out and discussed within this webinar. More importantly, Even within this pandemic time, how people can stick to a healthy diet was taught by Mr. Ashen.

This webinar was mainly explained how to keep on a well-balanced diet. And it was well described how the fat and sugar intake should be. On top of that, Mr. Ashen explained the pros and cons of having alcoholic beverages and the limitations of having alcoholic beverages.


The question and answer session were highly interactive since most of the participants came up with a variety of their questions. Overall this webinar was an effective and productive one to the participants since it gave a good knowledge regarding how to balance our diets. And Mr. Ashen made it clear that everyone who joined the webinar gained good knowledge out of this webinar.
